VP Joe Biden & USPTO Unveil "Patents 4 Patients"

Vice President Joe Biden and U.S. Department of Commerce's U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) have unveiled a new program as part of the "Cancer Moonshot" initiative. "Patents 4 Patients" will help fast-track and implement new cancer treatment applications to get the newest and most effective technologies to patients in roughly half the time.

"In his 2016 State of the Union Address, President Obama called upon the nation to harness the spirit of American innovation by identifying new ways to prevent, diagnose, and treat cancer," Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office Michelle K. Lee said in a press release. "As he noted, getting this done isn't just going to take the best and brightest across the medical, research, and data communities—but millions of Americans owning a stake of it. That's why by harnessing the power of patent data, and accelerating the process for protecting the intellectual property undergirding cancer immunotherapy breakthroughs, the USPTO is standing up and doing its part to help bring potentially lifesaving treatments to patients, faster."

The new fast-track program will be open to universities, bio-tech companies, pharmaceutical firms, and any other entities already in FDA approved clinic trials as soon as July 2016. Roughly 900 cancer immunotherapy applications are received by the USPTO every year. With the "Patents 4 Patients," many of those technologies now stand a chance of reaching patients faster with a proposed accelerated review process of 12 months or less.

You can read more about the Patents 4 Patients initiative in the press release "Teaming Up to Cure Cancer: New USPTO programs and resources to help Cancer Moonshot Initiative."
